The Council of Priests serves as a consultative body to the Bishop, offering advice on pastoral and administrative matters affecting the diocese. The Cathedral Chapter is composed of senior clergy who support the liturgical and spiritual life of the Cathedral. Together, these groups help maintain unity and effective leadership within the presbyterate.

What is the Council of Priests?

The Council of Priests is a body of priests who assist the Bishop in governing the Diocese. It serves as a consultative group, providing advice and support to the Bishop on matters concerning the pastoral welfare of the diocese.  

Purpose and Function

The Council’s primary role is to:

  • Advise the Bishop on pastoral issues affecting the diocese.
  • Foster unity and collaboration among the clergy.
  • Support the implementation of diocesan policies and initiatives.

Through regular meetings and discussions, the Council ensures that the perspectives and experiences of priests are considered in diocesan decision-making.

What is the Cathedral Chapter?

The Cathedral Chapter, known as the Canons of St Ambrose & St Charles, is a college of priests appointed by the Bishop to support the spiritual and pastoral mission of the diocese. Established under Canon Law, the Chapter focuses on:

  • Daily communal prayer and liturgical worship.
  • Fostering a shared community life among priests.
  • Encouraging ongoing intellectual and spiritual formation.

The Chapter is based at the Church of Our Lady and St Joseph in Carlisle, serving as a center for priestly support and renewal.  

Structure and Life

Members of the Chapter, both active and retired priests, commit to:

  • Participating in daily communal prayers, including Lauds and Vespers.
  • Engaging in regular theological study and reflection.
  • Living a communal life that emphasizes fraternity and mutual support.

The Chapter also welcomes other clergy for retreats and spiritual guidance, reinforcing the diocesan commitment to priestly well-being and collaboration.
